Unconventional tips to finding a new job in the Gambia

We all know the clichés when looking for a job. Have connections, put out a good resume, dress nice, follow-up, and so forth. It’s annoying looking for advice and getting what should be common sense. The problem is that everyone else is doing these things, and they won’t help you stick out from the crowd. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. Follow this guide to get there. Make Your Resume Unique If your job involves graphic design, and you have skills in that field, why turn in a boring piece of paper or just a sample PDF? There are ways to make your resume stand out. Though it is not relevant to turn your resume into chocolate bar wrappers, billboards, it is important to spend time on it and make it look great. You don’t have to pour hours into creating your resume, but try something different and you’ll be surprised at the results. It’s all about getting noticed. Get a Partner to Help You Out Imagine job searching as training. As with any training regimen, having a partner usually works out better. Whether it’s your spouse, a friend, or family member, having someone look through your applications and […]

Moving Forward: A new era for Gambian Women Entrepreneurs

It is a new Gambia and women entrepreneurs are not taking anything for granted in leading Gambia’ s new business ecosystem. In recent years we have seen women rise above and succeed in places and avenues they were once denied access. In the smiling coast of Africa, a new era has dawned – the new era for Gambian women Entrepreneurship. Young women entrepreneurs in particular are looking forward to less stringent laws that would allow for growth in the domestic market and eventually the international market. Rose Fatou Manga and Ndey Fatou Njie are making waves in the fashion industry and below is a detailed interview we had with these phenomenal women.   What is your name and what part of The Gambia are you from? Ndey Fatou Njie from Kanifing, The Gambia. How old are you? In my twenties What is the name of your business and what services do you offer? TiGA swimwear is the first swimwear brand in The […]

5 Tiny Reasons Your Job Applications are not Successful

By Ebrima Sawaneh Many new job seekers tend to wounder why they are not shortlisted after meeting the basic educational requirements for a job advert. However, if we take a serious review of most applications, you will found out that most first time applicants ignore the common saying “first impression matters”. In this article, I have reviewed 5 tiny but important mistakes first time job seeker usually commits. 1. Unprofessional Email address You may be using “funny” email account or name whiles going to school, however certain email addresses or email account name should not be used for a professional job application. You should not email your CV or applications using funny email accounts such as sexybaby@yahoo.com, baddestboy@yahoo.com. Why should someone employ the bad boy in town to run their office? In addition to email address, also check your email account name. Use your real and formal name as your email account name like Modou Dem or Ebrima Njie. A Recruiters can use this information to make first impression about the applicant. 2.  No Greetings or email content When you are applying a job via online form filling, there may be no space to greet the recipient. However, where you are […]

Start-ups in The Gambia doing well but unknown to many

Start-ups in The Gambia doing well but unknown to many

By Modou NS Njie Over the past few years The Gambia  witnessed a steady rise in entrepreneurship in the country which has been brought about by government policies especially through GIEPA, GCCI and other agencies such as NEDI, NEMA, GICAV etc. There have been a  number of projects geared towards encouraging entrepreneurship in the country and amongst them are the EMPRETEC Training program (coordinated by GIEPA) and Start-Up Incubator (coordinated by American Chamber of Commerce and funded by US Embassy Banjul). I would like to feature some business start-ups that are doing well but are unknown to most people in The Gambia.  I feel that given the necessary support these businesses will continue to do very well in the near future and they will contribute positively towards the development of the economy in The Gambia as well as create employment. Assutech Assutech is an ICT consulting firm founded by Hassan Jallow and registered in 2015 as one of the beneficiaries of the Start-up Incubator Project. They specialize in software (end to end solution) development and mobile application development (ios and android). They have developed several apps ranging from stock control and inventory, commodities price reporting system, GCCI app for registration […]

Top 10 most famous websites in the Gambia

By Ebrima S. Dem I recently started reading about the online community in The Gambia. Not just Gambians on social media but also home grown grown websites. My intention was to see which websites are most visited and how online businesses can target this growing trend of online interest, so as improve overall business performance and drive business in the country. Many Gambians especially young people now browse the internet to look up jobs, fashion, sports, shopping and so on. The new and vibrant local websites are tackling head-on the challenges of increasing the country’s presence on the world-wide web. Access to internet mainly via mobile is changing the way Gambians interact, buy and sell online. Even e-commerce stores of various types are now used as alternatives and opportunity to buy stuff online and have the items delivered to their homes. For a period of two months, I browsed numerous Gambian websites and using alexa analytics, woorank, whois lookup and other ranking tools I was able to reviewed over 50 them. I then ranked them according to the number of visitors received both locally and globally for a duration 6 months. Base on this analysis, I provide here a list […]
